Live visitor monitoring
See everyone on your site in real time — current page, location, device and engagement.
Live visitor monitoring gives you a real-time view of everyone currently on your site. The moment someone lands, they appear in your live view — so you can spot a high-intent visitor the instant they arrive and never miss a moment that matters. It is the always-on pulse of your traffic, updating as people move from page to page.
Getting visitors to appear
There is nothing to switch on. Once the widget is installed on your pages, every visitor shows up in the live view automatically within a second or two of loading a page. If your live view is empty, the most likely cause is that the snippet is missing or not firing — work through Installing the widget to confirm it is in place.
What you see for each visitor
Each live visitor is shown as a row with the context you need to decide whether to act:
- Current page — the page they are looking at right now, updating as they navigate.
- Referrer — where they came from, so you can tell a paid click from organic search or a direct visit.
- Location — their country and approximate geo, derived from their IP address.
- Device — the device they are browsing on.
- Engagement — how actively they are interacting, so the visitors worth your attention stand out.
Anonymous vs identified visitors
By default a new visitor is labelled Anonymous visitor. That is still useful — you can see their page, location and behaviour — but it is far more powerful when you know who they are. If you call identify() for logged-in users, the live view shows their real name and email instead, so you immediately recognise the people who matter most.
Acting on a live visitor
The live view is not just for watching — it is where you step in. From any live visitor you can:
- Jump into co-browsing and open the live console to see their screen as they do.
- Start a live chat to reach out while they are still on the page.
This is what turns monitoring into action: when a high-intent visitor lands, you can co-browse or chat with them right there and then.
Focusing the view with attributes
On a busy site the live view can fill up quickly. You can filter and focus by visitor attributes so you only watch the people you care about — for example a particular plan, region or campaign. See Attributes & segments for how to set and use those attributes.
Live view vs session replay
Live monitoring and session replay are two sides of the same coin. The live view is real time — it shows what is happening on your site right now and lets you intervene in the moment. Session replay is the after-the-fact counterpart: it records each visit so you can play it back pixel-for-pixel later, whether or not you were watching at the time.
Tips
- Identify your logged-in users early so live rows show real people, not "Anonymous visitor".
- Use the referrer and current page together to judge intent before you reach out.
- Filter by attributes to keep a high-traffic live view manageable.
- If a visitor leaves before you act, you can still review the whole visit in session replay.
Next steps
- Co-browsing & the live console — see a visitor's screen as they browse.
- Live chat & the inbox — reach out while they are still on the page.
- Session replay — play back any visit after it happens.
